Abstract
The history of Topchiev Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis is surveyed. The Institute was founded in 1934 and since that, many outstanding scientists have been worked there. Among them were I.M. Gubkin, who was a Vice-President of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Academician S. S. Nametkin, A.V. Topchiev, V.A. Kargin, A.V. Frost, M.M. Kusakov, A.N. Bashkirov, P.I. Sanin, and many others. The branches of research developed at the Institute are considered. These are petroleum composition and properties, petroleum refining, engine fuels, lubricating oils, catalysts of petrochemistry, chemical synthesis including the synthesis of biologically active materials, radiochemistry, etc.
