In the 1950s, Hydrocarbon Research, Inc. (HRI) developed a noncatalytic process for the upgrading of crude oils, residua and other similar feedstocks into high-quality fuel gas, naphtha and distillate. The process, now called the Dynacracking process, was evaluated in a 15-bbl/d (2. 4-m**3/d) development unit at HRI's R&D Center, accumulating some 14,000 hours of on-stream time over a four-year period. This article discusses the process, yields and economics for several case studies. Its commercial applications and the status of the program to construct a commercial-scale plant are also summarized.
