Abstract
South Africa dominates the 6 million mpty global ferrochrome market as its Bushveld complex's chromite reserves constitute about 75% of global reserves. The Xstrata-Merafe joint venture is building its Lion project as a brownfields development at its existing Vantech site near Nelspruit in South Africa's Mpumalanga province with the growth of ferrochrome market. The project which will follow the Merafe-Xstrata Lion facility into production is the Buffelsfontein Ferrochrome project near Mooinooi in the North West Province being developed by AIM-listed International Ferro Metals (IFM). The Buffelsfontein mine has a resource of 32.9 million mt at 37.6 Cr 2O3.
