A study on the remediation of an area located in the urban zone of Cagliari, in the South of Sardinia, Italy, used in the past as a coastal storage for petroleum products was carried out. In > 40 yr, a wide range of hydrocarbon products have been stored in the site: the lighter (more volatile, e.g., gasoline), the mid-range (e.g., diesel fuel, kerosene), and the heavier petroleum products (non-volatile, e.g., heating oil, lubricating oils). These have caused widespread contamination of soil and groundwater. The technical solutions adopted and carried out in the study would permit the recovery of the site, allowing residential and commercial reuse of the whole area. The use of phytoremediation and landfarming as integrated technologies were a good choice for efficiently treating soil and water within the site, promoting cleaned soil reuse, and avoiding an increase in urban traffic concerns. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 8th International In Situ and On-Site Bioremediation Symposium (Baltimore, MD 6/6-9/2005).
