Abstract
Reaction of phenylacetonitrile derivatives 1 with vinylidene chloride (2) in the presence of 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide and tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate (TBAHS) as a catalyst (phase-Transfer catalysis, PTC) gives 2-substituted 2-ethynyl-2-phenylacetonitriles 3 in high yield. An addition-elimination route with the intermediacy of chloroacetylene is proposed. © 1991 Georg Thieme Verlag. All rights reserved.
