Ethylene dihalides react with hydrazine hydrate to give ethylenedi-hydrazine, 1,4-diaminopiperazine, and poly(ethylenehydrazine). The yield of polymer is increased if the reaction is carried out in the presence of a hindered base, e.g., ethyldi-isopropylamine. Ethylenedihydrazine only is produced from ethylene dichloride with a large excess of hydrazine hydrate. The structure of the polymer has not been determined. Failure to obtain ethylenediamine as a product of hydrogenolysis of the polymer suggests that the group ·NH·NH·CH2·CH2 cannot be a recurring unit in the chain ; nor is the polymer made up entirely of ·N(NH2)·CH2·CH2·;- units.
