Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), Alabama has set a goal to reduce the release and offsite transfer of toxic chemicals by 50 percent by the end of 1999, and to eliminate the use of ozone depleting substances (ODSs) by the end of 1996. The primary chemicals used at MSFC are solvents used in various cleaning processes. In this case, pollution prevention often involves solvent replacement or use of alternative cleaning technologies. Due to the strict specifications associated with the space program, replacement of solvents or cleaning technologies at MSFC requires extensive testing to ensure that the replacement solvent or technology will meet the same standards as the existing methods. This paper summarizes some of the pollution prevention alternatives that have been identified for perchloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and Freon 113. The selection process used to replace ODSs in two applications at MSFC is also discussed. Eleven projects or general categories of projects are recommended for initial implementation to allow MSFC to meet it’s pollution prevention goals. Completing these projects should allow MSFC to meet its goal of reducing the release and offsite transfer of reportable toxic chemicals by 1999 and to eliminate the use of ODSs by the end of 1996. © 1996, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.
