Abstract
Although glycol benzoates are not well-known plasticizers for PVC compounds, they are presently being marketed as such because they are effective, efficient solvators whose prime virtue lies in their low fusion temperatures. They can reduce the amount of increasingly expensive energy required for fusion and decrease production time as well. Benzoates also offer greater availability than the widely used di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DOP), currently in short supply. In the reported experiments, a sample general-purpose resin, plastisol, and dry blend were plasticized with each of the following: dipropylene glycol dibenzoate (DGDB), propylene glycol dibenzoate (PGDB), a fifty-fifty blend of DGDB and diethylene glycol dibenzoate (DP/EDB), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), and DOP. Benzoate-plasticized compounds dry blended more easily, were resistant to oil and solvent extraction, and consistently reduced processing time and/or fusion temperature. The two phthalates functioned as control plasticizers. Extensive experimental data are tabulated, plotted and evaluated in terms of technological advantages of glycal-based plasticizers.
