Indoor residential fate model of phthalate plasticizers
Abstract
Phthalates are ubiquitous pollutants in indoor environments and have emerged as a serious public concern due to their adverse effects on humans. It is important to characterize emissions of phthalates from indoor sources and their environmental fates thereafter. Such knowledge will provide a foundation for exposure/risk assessments and interventions aimed at reducing phthalate exposures. In this study, we applied di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) from vinyl flooring as an illustrative example, a three-compartment model was developed to predict the fate and transport of phthalates in a residential home. Considering particles are important carriers of phthalates due to the strong partitioning, we included particle transport (deposition and resuspension) in this model. The results showed that indoor suspended particles and ventilation rate both have impacts on indoor phthalate and exposure levels, and phthalates may persist for years after the source is removed.
