DOP, dioctyl phthalate [or di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate(DEHP)], a plasticizer, has been used to produce test aerosols for in-place filter testing of HEPA filters and for respirator fit testing. Recent studies have shown this material to be a potential health hazard and substitute materials for test aerosols are being sought. In this study, particle size distributions were measured for corn oil, DEHP, di(2-ethylhexyl)-sebacate (DOS), mineral oil, and polyethylene glycol (PEG), using a Laskin nozzle aerosol generator and an optical particle counter. Size distributions showed count median diameters from 0.22 to 0.30 μm, with little difference between materials, operating pressures, or liquid levels. The size distributions produced with corn oil and mineral oil were the closest to the DEHP size distribution.
