Dioctylphthalate (DOP) or di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), commonly used as a plasticiser, has been used to produce test aerosols for in-place filter testing of HEPA filters and for quantitative respirator fit testing for over 30 years. Some questions arose about 10 years ago regarding the safety and potential health hazards of this material. Therefore, over the years many substitute materials for test aerosols have come into use. This present study reports on the various DOP alternatives and the concentrations of aerosols produced in the Laskin nozzle type aerosol generator in comparison with the concentration normally produced using DOP. Substitutes include di (2-ethylhexyl) sebacate (DOS), mineral oil, Ondina EL, Kaydol, corn oil, Emery 3004 and polyethylene glycol. It discusses the results of a study undertaken to check the effect on aerosol generator output of variations in liquid level, and the changes in concentration resulting from the use of various substitute liquids for the test aerosol.
