A description is given of a falling cylinder viscometer, in which the only moving part is the sinker itself. Before making a measurement the sinker is lifted electromagnetically by a series of coils along the viscometer tube. After the sinker is released its fall time is detected inductively by the same coils. The operating cycle is remotely controlled, and a predetermined number of measurements at a given pressure may be made automatically. One sinker is used in the viscosity range 0.01-10 P, and a second sinker with a central hole is used to extend the upper limit to 3000P. Both sinkers are unguided. Calibration is necessary only at atmospheric pressure, and this procedure is described. An analysis of the motion of the sinker is given, and from this analysis the changes in the calibration constants with pressure of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate and di(n-butyl)phthalate are reported: the results obtained are estimated to be accurate to +or-2%.
