Abstract
α-Tocopherol 1a was oxidized by dioxane dibromide to 5-bromomethyl-γ-tocopherylquinone 2b. The quinone 2b undergoes a spontaneous cyclization to 5-formyl-γ-tocopherol 4. A mechanism of brominative oxidation and cyclization was proposed.
