By kinetic and spectroscopic studies the reaction between acetyl chloride and acetic acid in CCl4 and dioxane media is shown to proceed by not a conventional route, but results in formation of tetrahedric σ-complex of 1 : 1 composition. The latter further reacts with a second molecule of acetyl chloride to form a new σ-complex as the final product of a reversible reaction. Hydrogen bonding strongly decelerate the reaction, reducing the rate constants by two orders of magnitude.
