A comparative study of physico chemical analysis of ground water near municipal solid waste dump site and non dump site around Mayiladuthurai, India

Ground Water samples were collected from five bore wells located near the open dumpsitearound 500 meters from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) of Mayiladuthurai, Tamilnadu State, India around five to ten kilometers from Municipal Solid Waste of Mayiladuthurai. The samples were collected and sent to the laboratory within six hours for analysis. The physio chemical parameters like Total Solid(TS), Total Dissolved State(TDS),pH, Electrical Conductivity, Biological Oxygen Demand(BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD), Hardness and Iron concentration were studied. During the study, it was determined that TDS ranges from 644 mg/l to 127 mg/l andnondump sites come under371 mg/l to 921 mg/l. These values are compared with permissible limit. The higher value ofBOD indicatesthat ground water contain more living organisms when compared to non MSW. The higher value of COD indicates that ground water is polluted by inorganic chemicals as compared to non MSW. Therefore the soil parameters in study area have influenced leachate migration. Abstract Livestock is one of the important agricultural sub-sector that competing overall economic growth as it contributes 1.5 per cent to GDP globally. About 29 per cent of the world's land surface is used for livestock production, either by stable pasture for grazing or croplands for animal fodder and feed. In a world where a growing number of consumers and producers have instant access of livestock products we have a moral mandate to guide the expanding and rapidly changing global livestock sector so as to minimize its negative environmental impacts and maximize the potential benefits both economically and environmentally. Thus researcher tried to analyse the increase of livestock and their possible impacts on environment in India. The secondary data were used for analysis. The data were collected from international and national journals, reports, magazines etc. and processed and with simple percentage. It is found that Indian livestock is growing rapidly and there are both positive and negative effects of livestock husbandry on environment.
