A method for separating the gas phase benzoylation products of aniline (62533) was developed. High pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) was performed. Gas mixtures were eluted with 50 percent methanol in a 50 millimolar solution of phosphate buffer followed by 75 percent methanol on phosphate buffer. Other mixtures were eluted with 55 percent methanol in phosphate followed by gradient elution of 70 percent methanol/phosphate followed by isocratic elution with 70 percent methanol/phosphate. All elutions were carried out at 1 milliliter per minute flow rate with detection at 270 and 360 nanometers. All solutions were filtered before examination; products included biphenyl (92524), diphenylamine (122394), 2-aminobenzophenone (2835770), 3-aminobenzophenone (2835781), 4-aminobenzophenone (1137413), and benzanilide (93981). The method using three elutions was found to be more effective for resolving the compounds. At 360 nanometers, only 3-aminobenzophenone could be detected. At 270 nanometers, 3-aminobenzophenone and benzanilide could not be resolved. The authors conclude that aniline derivatives can be detected by HPLC.
