Analytical methods for determining acetone (67641), ethyl-alcohol (64175), and isopropyl-alcohol (67630) in mixtures were described. Immersion refractometry was used to determine the compounds if the total concentration was less than 10 percent by volume. Acetone was also determined by a colorimetric procedure. After mixing the sample, 0.5 milliliter (ml) of 30 percent sodium-hydroxide (NaOH) was added, and the solution was allowed to stand 15 minutes. The color was compared to that of a set of standard acetone solutions. This method was used with samples containing up to 0.02 grams (g) acetone. Isopropyl-alcohol was determined by a variation of the procedure. Isopropyl-alcohol was oxidized to acetone by adding 5ml of saturated bromine water to 10ml of the sample. The solution was allowed to stand 3 to 6 hours in a cool, dark place. One milliliter of 1 percent NaOH was added, followed by 2ml of 30 percent NaOH. After standing 15 minutes, the color was compared to that of a set of standards. The amount of acetone found represented the amount originally present plus that formed by the oxidation of isopropyl-alcohol. The amount of isopropyl-alcohol was found by subtracting the amount of acetone present originally. This procedure determined 0.025ml isopropyl-alcohol in a 10ml sample. Ethyl-alcohol was determined by a procedure based on potassium-dichromate oxidation. A solution containing 10g potassium-dichromate and 25ml concentrated sulfuric-acid per 100ml water was added to a sample of equal volume. The resulting acetic-acid was steam distilled and titrated with a 1 Normal solution of NaOH. In the titration, 1ml of NaOH was equal to 0.058ml ethyl-alcohol.
