P-tert butylphenol formaldehyde resin: Part I. leather watch straps and shoes
Abstract
A case report was presented of a 46 year old woman who specialized in nail treatments in a beauty salon for several years and who developed a dermatitis of her fingertips soon after she began to employ a new imported nail adhesive to affix artificial nails to her customers' nails. The patch test reaction was positive for the new nail adhesive and 5 percent para-tertiary-butylphenol-formaldehyde (PTBF) resin in petrolatum. Other cases of dermatitis due to PTBF resin were reviewed. The authors suggest testing of patients exposed to PTBF resin with both para-tertiary-butylphenol (PTBP) and also formaldehyde. PTBP is usually tested in a 1 percent concentration in petrolatum and formaldehyde in a 1 percent concentration in aqueous solution. The author suggests that if a dermatologist conducts tests using resin known to be free of formaldehyde and free PTBP, the concentration should be 10 percent.
