Allergic contact dermatitis to para-tertiary-butylphenol-formaldehyde (PTBF) resin in leather watch straps and shoes was reported in two individuals. A 46 year old woman developed a severe dermatitis of the wrist after wearing a new leather watch strap for 10 days; patch tests were strongly positive to leather shavings from the strap and 1 percent PTBF in petrolatum. The glue or cement used to apply the inner lining of the strap to the outer leather band contained PTBF resin. The second case involved a 36 year old man who acquired a dermatitis of the dorsal aspects of his feet 2 weeks after wearing a new pair of shoes manufactured in Spain. The patch test reaction to PTBF resin 1 percent in petrolatum was strongly positive. Positive results were also obtained with a piece of the inner side of the shoe lining. The author concludes that PTBF resin has become an increasingly common cause of allergic contact dermatitis from shoes and leather watch straps. Testing with PTBF resin in 1 percent petrolatum should be performed with patients with dermatitis of the wrists and particularly the dorsal aspects of the feet.
