Abstract
The specific-heat anomalies of amorphous arsenic and germania between 2 K and 23 K are explained with a phenomenological model for the vibrational density of states consisting of Debye-type modes and of the temperature-dependent modes coming from the «phonon»-«phonon» scattering. The results obtained with our phenomenological model agree very well with the experiment of Wu and Luo for arsenic and of Antoniou and Morrison for germania. The frequency distribution difference between the amorphous and crystalline states, which has a well-defined temperature-dependent maximum, is obtained for both arsenic and germania.
