Abstract
HEEP COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. A chitosan/chitin mixture was studied as a potential agent for the removal of As (V) from ground waters. The As concentration of contaminated waters was lowered to levels accepted by the Canadian Department of Health and Welfare and the WHO upon treatment with the mixture; Cu and sulfate levels were also reduced. The capacity of the mixture at pH 7 was 0.13 mu-equiv As/g mixture with a distribution coefficient of 65. The interaction betweeen As and these polymers is also discussed.
