Abstract
HEEP COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. In a lettuce infusion medium all specimens of Philodina roseola were killed in less than 2 days at 40 degrees C but some specimens lived long enough to reproduce at 38 degrees C. The rate of increase of P. roseola increased exponentially with temperature in the range 15-35 degrees C, but its median life span decreased exponentially in the same temperature range. For short exposure times aquatic organisms can probably withstand higher concentrations of toxic materials at lower temperatures than at higher temperatures. The longer the exposure time, the less the effect of temperature upon the concentration of toxic material which will kill 1/2 of the test organisms. Life-span (TLm) values appear to be independent of temperature. (This study is applicable to development of a bioassay of toxicity for aquatic organisms).
