Precancerous changes in sputum cytology were investigated in humans. Sputum samples were taken from 24 uranium miners who subsequently developed lung cancer. Samples were examined microscopically for cell abnormalities. Varying degrees of metaplasia were seen. Cell appearance became progressively more abnormal as the patient came closer to cancer diagnosis. Similarities were noted between the structure of the abnormal cells and the type of tumor that finally developed. The authors conclude that sputum cytology is a good way to detect precancerous changes in high risk groups.
