Job related contact allergies were reviewed in metallurgy workers including smelters, machine tool workers, welders, metal bonders and galvanized sheet metal warehousemen. The primary allergens affecting smelters were considered: hexavalent-chromium (18540299), phenoplastic resins and other allergens such as Sudan-IIIG (85869) and p-aminoazobenzene (62533). Contact allergies among machine tool workers have been reported for emulsifiable and nonemulsifiable oils, the latter including compound oils, inactive nonstaining oils and active staining oils. Sensitization has been attributed to the oil additives. Cutting oil dermatitis in machine tool workers, which was described as usually irritant but rarely allergic, was discussed. The existence of hexavalent-chromium in smoke from welding operations was considered as a cause of dermatitis in welders. Different plastics used in the bonding of metals such as polyurethanes, epoxy resins and phenoplast resins were considered, as well as the Aerodux, Hidux and Redux processes which utilize phenoplast resins. The involvement of chromium (7440473) in allergic eczema from galvanized sheet metal was described.
