Abstract
BIOSIS COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. The state-of-the-art of the analysis of metals in sewage sludges is presented, with special attention to aspects such as sample preparation and the fast analytical control of as many elements as possible in a single sample. The need for simple, accurate and precise procedures for evaluating the toxicity of sewage sludges and their suitability for agricultural use is referred also to the development of speciation strategies. For the latter purpose the combination of chromatography and atomic spectrometry will be helpful for identifying the chemical forms of metals in sewage sludges, but this strategy must be combined with the use of mild and quantitative methods for fast and selective leaching of the different chemical species without modifying the composition of samples.
