A recent analysis of mortality among workers in an English asbestos textile factory suggests that about 3% of men might eventually die of asbestos-induced disease after 20 years of exposure to the same type of the fiber at an average dust level of 1 fiber/cm super(3). This prediction was based on various assumptions, particularly that excess cancer mortality is linearly related to dust level. If this crucial assumption is correct, the approximate effects of different fibers and working environments could be estimated in the same way, rational hygiene standards could be formulated for most areas where asbestos is handled.
