1,4-Dioxane (DX) is a rodent carcinogen which induces liver tumours in both sexes of rats and mice and nasal tumours in rats. Mirkova has reported that DX is weakly active in the mouse bone marrow micronucleus assay. Studies were therefore conducted in an attempt to reproduce independently this weak activity. The present studies were performed during our transition from the use of Giemsa to acridine orange (AO) as our stain of choice for bone marrow smears. Thus, one study was analysed using Giemsa stained smears and the rest using AO stained smears.
