Abstract
Petunia (Petunia hybrida Vilm. cv. White Champion), kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Honkintoki) and radish plants (Raphanus sativus L. cv. Comet) were exposed to 10, 30 or 60 ppb (nL/L) of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) for 4 h a day for three days during the experimental period of one week. The dry weight growth of petunia and kidney bean was reduced, but that of radish plants was not affected by the exposure to 30 or 60 ppb PAN. In petunia and kidney bean, a positive correlation was observed between the PAN-induced reduction rates of plant dry weight and net assimilation rates (NAR). In petunia, PAN-induced reduction in the net photosynthetic rate occurred on the day immediately following the experimental period. It was concluded that the sensitivity of the three species to PAN can be ranked as petunia > kidney bean > radish plants, and that the PAN-induced inhibition of net photosynthesis is one of the factors relating to the reduction of growth.
