4-Chlorobenzotrichloride was evaluated for toxicity in acute tests. Summary reports are presented. Acute oral tests in rats identified an LD50 value (and 95% confidence limits) of 820 (730 to 910) mg/kg. Decreased motor activity, tremors, diarrhea, piloerection, chromodaacryorrhea, and irritation to the gastrointestinal tract were noted. The acute dermal toxicity in rabbits was >2 g/kg. Skin reactions were mild to moderate, but persistent; no other toxic signs were noted. Primary skin irritation tests in rabbits indicated the substance is not corrosive, but causes erythema and edema. Eye irritation tests in rabbits showed no effect on the cornea and iris of rinsed or unrinsed eyes, but irritation to conjunctival tissue was observed in both groups. Preliminary results suggest the half-life of this material in pure water at 25 degrees Celsius is about 2.5 minutes.
