Mercuric chloride is known to induce a variety of immunologic disorders in susceptible strains of rats and mice [1–3]. It was recently reported that HgCl2 treatment of Brown Norway rats increased the level of mast cell specific proteases in serum, which suggests activation of mast cells [4]. To obtain greater insight into the action of HgCl2 on mast cell function we have studied the effects of HgCl2 on mediator release from mouse and rat mast cells.
