The crystal structures of [Cu2Cl2(HTren)(2)]Hg3Cl10 (.) 4H(2)O (I), [Cu(S-HLyS)(2)]Hg3Cl8 (.) 2H(2)O (II), [Cu(En)(2)]Hg3Cl8 (III), and [Cu(En)(2)]Hg2Cl6 (IV) (En is ethylenediamine, Tren is tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, HLys is S-lysine) were determined. The crystals of 1 contain binuclear cations in which the Cu atoms coordinated by tridentate protonated ligands HTren are bridged by chlorine atoms. In the discrete centrosymmetric (Hg3Cl10)(4-) anion, the central linear quasi-molecule HgCl2 and two peripheral equivalent tetrahedral groups (HgCl4)(2-) can be discerned. The anionic part of the crystals of II consists of HgCl2 quasi-molecules and bis(tetrahedral) ions (Hg2Cl6)(2-) combined into chains by a weak Hg-Cl interaction. The chains are linked by square trans-[Cu(HLyS)(2)](2+) moieties-the Hg atoms of the HgCl2 molecules interact with two 0 atoms and the Cl atoms of the (Hg2Cl6)(2-) ions interact with the Cu atoms-to form layers. The crystals of III consist of [(Hg6Cl16)(4-)](n) layers (all the atoms are nonequivalent) and three types of [Cu(En)2]2, complexes, which combine the layers through Cu-Cl interaction to forma framework. The crystals of IV are composed of [(HgCl3)(-)](n) chains with one terminal Cl atom and two bridging Cl atoms between Hg atoms. The terminal Cl atoms interact with the Cu atoms of neighboring square-planar [Cu(En)(2)](2), complexes to form the layered structure IV.
