Trace concentrations of mercury were determined by flow-through stripping coulometry in soils and soil extracts. The method is based on the electrochemical collection of Hg in a gold-plated porous electrode followed by the galvanostatic stripping of the deposit while the stripping time is measured. Organic substances such as humic acids exert no interfering effect. The interference due to Fe(III) species can be eliminated by adding a diphosphate solution to the sample. The limit of quantification of the method is 0.5 mu g dm(-3) and the upper concentration range is about 10 mg dm(-3).
