A radiometric investigation was carried out on the extraction of aqueous Zn(II) and Mn(II) with a hydrophobic porphyrin (5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine, TPP) through a metal exchange reaction of Pb(II)-TPP. The distribution ratios (D) of these metals were found to be independent of the Pb(II) concentration in the aqueous phase. Lead(II) in the aqueous phase acted as a catalyst which promoted the metal-TPP complexation.
