BIOSIS COPYRIGHT: BIOL ABS. Levels of total mercury determined on the white muscle tissue of sowrdfish, Xiphias gladius L., cught i nthe Azores, ranged from 0.06 to 4.91 mugy concentrations were studied in relation to length, weight, age, and sex and significant sex-based differences were found. The rate of mercury accumulation in males is significantly faster than in females and for medium-large sized fish mean mercury levels were higher in males. Possible causes of these differences are discussed. The use of swordfish with monitoring purposes and implications of mercury levels for the commercial swordfish fishery and human consumption are also discussed.
