The vapour phase catalytic hydrogenation of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol using copper supported Magnesium-Alumina (Mg-Al) hydrotalicite (CuHT) catalyst was studied. The effect of various copper metal loadings, reaction temperature and different preparatory methods on the activity of catalysts was determined. A better catalytic performance was observed for 12.5CuHT catalyst prepared by impregnation method at 250 °C. The maximum conversion of about 68% with 93% benzyl alcohol selectivity was obtained at the optimized conditions. The catalyst was active upto 87 h with time-on-stream. The activity of CuHT was influenced by high surface area, smaller crystallite size and weak metal support interaction. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.
