Abstract
A hygiene survey was conducted among male employees of an anion-exchange resin production facility using bis(chloromethyl)ether (542881). Those employees with five or more years exposure to bis(chloromethyl)ether, BCME, had a statistically significant association with abnormal sputum cytology, or 34 percent as compared to 11 percent for uranium surface miners. A lung cancer incidence study was made of 136 male workers, 1955-1972; data are given on five cases of bronchogenic cancer. Other studies found similar incidences of lung cancer among BCME workers. Carcinogenicity of BCME was first demonstrated in mice and these results of occupational exposure studies indicate a need for prior animal testing of new chemicals.
