Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are a highly diverse group of chemical compounds with high vapor pressure. VOC contribute in the presence of nitrogen oxides NO and NO2 to photochemical ozone formation in the atmosphere. High ozone levels impact environment and population and require control. A prerequisite of effective reduction strategies is the sound understanding of the ozone formation cycle in the atmospheric surface layer and the role of VOC within. One key-component in ozone control measures is the reduction of emissions of ozone precursors such as VOC. In Europe and Germany evaporation during solvent applications is one of the major sources. Also forests, in particular poplar plantations used for production of alternative fuel, are VOC emitters. New models ensure a precise analysis of VOC emissions in space and time and effectively contribute to the development of sound emission reduction measures for mitigating high surface ozone levels during, hot, dry and calm weather.
