Determination of polychlorinated biphenyls in environmental samples
Abstract
Papers presented at a symposium held in Ottawa in 1971 described developments in the use of chromatography, neutron activation, atomic absorption using a heated graphite atomizer, polarography, mass spectrometry, and high-resolution gamma spectrometry for determination of polychlorinated biphenyls, pesticides, organic mercury compounds, total carbon, trace metals, phosphorus, nitrilotriacetate, and radioactive isotopes. Details were given of biological methods for assessing water quality and of instruments for monitoring conditions continuously in surface waters. Contributions were also made on the infiltration of nitrates and phosphates to ground water; combating oil pollution in coastal waters and in the presence of ice floes; biological effects on fresh waters of heated discharges; and toxicity of kraft mill effluents to salmon.
