An on site visit was made to the Chemical Division of the Georgia-Pacific Corporation, Taylorsville, Mississippi to investigate control methods used to lessen employee exposures to hazardous materials during the production of formaldehyde (50000). Formaldehyde was manufactured at this site by oxidation of methanol (67561) using an iron/molybdenum-oxide catalyst. Health and safety guidelines were provided for the facility from the corporate office. An industrial hygienist was employed at the corporate level. Safety inspections were conducted weekly and contingency plans for emergencies were well defined. An emergency eye wash and shower was located in each of the following areas: rail car methanol receiving, truck methanol receiving, rail car formaldehyde loading, truck formaldehyde loading, and formaldehyde production unit. Additional protective equipment included respirators, rubber gloves, protective suits, and boots. None of the short term formaldehyde samples taken exceeded the OSHA ceiling limit of 3 parts per million (ppm). Personal samples indicated that formaldehyde operators had exposures ranging from 0.9 to 2.4ppm. Control strategies used in the methanol unloading and handling area, control room, area of the absorber, at sampling points, and during formaldehyde storage and loading operations were reviewed.
