Abstract
In vitro antimicrobial screening of twenty-four sponge species (Poriferae), collected from the Uraba Gulf reefs (Colombian Caribbean region), against certified strains of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichia coli 25922) and yeast (Candida albicans 10231) was conducted in this study. Three extracts of each sponge with solvents of different polarity were evaluated (methanol, chloroform and n-hexane) through the disk diffusion assay. Nineteen species demonstrated activity against some the microbes tested (80%), where the three most active species with the most broad antimicrobial spectrum were: Leucetta aff. floridana, Cinachyrella kuekenthali and Svensea zeai. This is the first biological activity report of the Uraba Gulf sponges.
