Intended to serve as an introductory text for use by undergraduate students of ecology and environmental sciences, this ten-chapter book deals with atmospheric pollution and its impact on plants and human beings. Initial chapters examine the sources and ambient concentrations of primary and secondary pollutants. These include coverage of interrelationships between the physical and chemical factors of the atmosphere. Chapter three gives a historical account of the subject. Later chapters present information on the transport of contaminants across regional, national, and international boundaries as well as the processes involved in global climate change as a result of pollution. Adverse effects of poor air quality on human health, crops, and forests are also covered. Air pollution control measures and strategies for improving air quality are addressed. The concluding chapter discusses educational, research, and technology transfer issues related to air pollution from an international perspective. A subject index, a glossary of terms used in the text, end-of-chapter references, tables, maps, color photographs, and other illustrations accompany the text.
