Abstract
The analytical determination of organic peroxides is reviewed. The structure, occurrence, and stability of organic peroxides are discussed. The structure and chemical properties of peroxy acids, alkyl hydroperoxides, peroxy esters, dialkyl peroxides, and olefin/oxygen copolymers, are summarized. The separation and conversion of organic peroxides are discussed. Removal of peroxides from solvents, the separation of peroxides from mixtures by means of alkali, and conversion of peroxides to derivatives are considered. Established and potential analytical methods for peroxide determination are surveyed. Physical and instrumental methods are discussed. Chemical reduction methods are described. Colorimetric and photometric procedures are considered. The infrared spectrum of the hydroperoxide group is described. Polarographic analysis is examined. Analysis by iodine (7553562) liberation procedures is considered. Recommended laboratory procedures for analysis by gas chromatography, polarography, iodine reduction, sodium-arsenite (7784465), and colorimetric methods are presented. Analysis of peroxide mixtures according to class without prior separation is discussed.
