Vitex trifolia (Family: Verbenaceae) grows as an herbaceous
plant in Egypt. Most of the Verbenaceae plants contain phenolic compounds which have important
pharmacologically properties. V. trifolia aerial parts methanol extract was fractionated by
repeated column chromatographic separation to obtain a phenyl ethanoid which isolated for the
first time from the genus Vitex along with five phenolic metabolites. The identification and
structure elucidation of the isolated compounds were based on chemical and spectral data (UV,
ESI-MS, (HNMR)-H-1, (CNMR)-C-13, HMQC and HMBC) and also by direct comparison with respectively
published data. Cytotoxic activities of the plant aerial parts extracts (methanol, ethyl acetate
and chloroform) have been studied herein for the first time using, brine shrimp bioassay method
(LC50 values 140 mg ml(-1), 165 mg ml(-1) and 180 mg ml(-1), respectively). Total phenolic
content of different aerial parts extracts and the antioxidant activity of the major isolates has
been studied as well. The radical scavenging activities of compounds 1 - 3 were measured and
compound 1 have been identified as the most promising compound. [Salah EL-Kousy, Mona Mohamed,
