Abstract
IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP Ethylcellulose (EC) and cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) were used to prepare controlled-release and enteric coated capsule formulations, respectively, containing oxolamine phosphate and were studied to determine drug release, resistance, and solubility in vitro and in 2 male subjects (ages 30 and 32 yr). Drug release in vivo showed good in vitro-in vivo correlation. Drug release from EC capsules could be controlled by changing the concentration and viscosity of drug solution, diameter of the hole through which the drug was filled, and capsule size. The resistance and solubility of CAP capsules were controlled with in vitro and in vivo tests. The capsules were resistant in the stomach and dissolved in the intestinal medium 2 h after administration. It was concluded that EC and CAP can be used to prepare controlled-release and enteric coated capsules.
