Stearyl and cetyl alcohols are the least irritating of the alcohols, and are present in many topical medicaments as vehicle ingredients. The commercial stearyl and cetyl alcohols used are not pure, but contain impurities, including other alcohols that may be potent sensitizers. We report here a case of contact dermititis due to impurities in stearyl and cetyl alcohols.
