Abstract
Pure n-alkanes and 1-alkanols promoted papilloma growth in the skin of Swiss mice which had been treated with a noncarcinogenic dose of dimethylbenzanthracene. Decanol, dodecane, and tetradecane were the most potent; hexanol, hexane, and octane were inactive. One-fourth of the papillomas became squamous cell carcinomas. A difference of two carbon atoms separated equipotent alkanes and alkanols. The tumor-promoting effect of these substances was not identical with that of a croton extract studied under similar conditions.
