Abstract
Nitro-cellulose lacquers are ever increasing in use industrially. They contain many solvents which vary from time to time. The poisonous nature of benzol has led to its elimination, The present study is concerned with other solvents used. The authors, after experiments with animals, divided the solvents tested into three groups:
1. Those usable with safety in concentrations usually employed or possibly in somewhat higher concentrations as ingredients of brushing or spraying lacquers. Ethyl acetate and amyl acetate, and possibly butyl acetate, would be placed in this class.
2. Those usable with safety in present concentrations but to be increased with caution as possibly harmful if increased materially. Here would be listed gasolene, turpentine, and xylol.
3. Those for which the present practice probably represents nearly the upper limit of safety in use as spraying lacquer constituents. In this group are toluol and butyl alcohol.
The recommendation is made that lacquers should never be used without reasonable exhaust ventilation to ensure that inhalation of volatile solvents is avoided. Details are given of the results obtained by exposing guineapigs to varying vapour concentrations of the solvents tested. E. L. Collis.
