IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP Lead poisoning attributed to use of an East Indian folk medicine that contained 6% lead is reported in a 41-yr-old female patient residing in the United States; an analysis of the heavy metal content of the folk medicines, which are available in India, was also performed. Withdrawal of the folk remedy and chelation therapy with edetate calcium disodium (calcium disodium edetate) led to dramatic improvement of the patient's symptoms. Heavy metals identified in the sampled folk medicines included lead, mercury, arsenic, gold and cadmium.
