Principles and Practical Applications
The risks associated with exposure to pesticides were reviewed. Different pesticides, methods of application, and routes of exposure were discussed. The toxic effects associated with exposure to chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds were described. The use of organophosphates, and the diagnosis, treatment and toxic effects of exposure to organophosphates were discussed. The properties of carbamates, anticholinesterase agents similar to the organophosphates, were examined along with the nonanticholinesterase effects of organophosphate compounds. Discussions of other classes of pesticides including herbicides, fungicides, fumigants, inorganic arsenicals, rodenticides, and naturally occurring insecticides were presented. The authors provide recommendations for the design and implementation of industrial hygiene and medical surveillance programs.
