The systemic effects resulting from exposure to certain chlorinated hydrocarbons, including characteristic acneform eruptions and pathological changes of the liver, are discussed. The literature of the effects of chlorinated naphthalenes is briefly summarized with reference to both experimental and clinical aspects. Three liver associated deaths in workers handling these substances are presented in some detail. Autopsy findings and recommendations for prevention are given. All illnesses occurring among workers exposed to the chlorinated naphthalenes and diphenyls should be reported. Persons demonstrating these symptoms should be removed from further exposure to these chemicals. Persons suffering from liver disease should not be exposed to chlorinated hydrocarbons. Persons exposed to chlorinated hydrocarbons should not be administered certain general anesthetics (chloroform, avertin), and persons having been given certain general anesthetics should not be exposed to chlorinated hydrocarbons.
